Bakery & Pizza Night

Standard

We decided to create an opportunity for our older girls to develop their baking skills while lessening our dependence on increasingly expensive cooking gas by building a fuel-efficient wood-fired brick oven at Malayaka House. Construction was complete in April of 2011, along with a proper kitchen around it to keep the area clean, safe, controlled, and dedicated to our business activities.

Bookkeeping, scheduling, and keeping track of supplies are all skills demonstrated by our teens as they run the bakery and pizza restaurant.

Jacinta, one of our home’s oldest children, is training a team of bakers as we develop a prosperous income-generating activity that feeds the healthy market in Entebbe for good bread, high quality cakes, and pizza.

Supplies all laid out for a busy night ahead!

We have expanded our baking activities to complement our guest house, steady flow of volunteers, and friends in the community. Two evenings per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we host Malayaka House Pizza Night. The menu consists of a build-your-own pizza, a loaf of bread to take home, dessert, and fresh juice. A team of hosts and waitresses works alongside the bakers to welcome guests, take orders, and provide first-class service to our customers.

Our pizza nights began in February 2012 and have become a popular social event in Entebbe. The United Nations employees and Swift Air flight attendants and pilots have provided a solid base of support and consider Malayaka House pizza “the best pizza in town”. Our next step is developing a delivery program targeting these satisfied customers and expanding our market.

Stretch your neck out…

Projects so far away, in exotic lands with cultures and issues different from our own might seem overwhelming and never ending. Malayaka House, to many, is in a far away land, in a culture which seems so unaligned to ours. This is so far from reality. Laughter fills our house. Children read, ride bikes, love ice cream and enjoy pizza nights. They look forward to trips to the swimming pool and get excited when friends, new and old, come over to visit. They are brothers and sisters, usually harmonious, but sometimes rumble. They are just like you. Like your sons and daughter, brothers and sister. Full of love for their family…which maybe is a bit bigger than yours. 38 and counting! So go on. Stick your neck out a bit & support a family far away, but close at heart. To make a donation, click here. Much love, from our family to yours.

A Pep Talk from Kid President

At first glance, Kid President is just a kid. You smile at his courage and admire his maturity. However, this kid is really on to something! We all need this childish glow. Life isn’t as difficult as we make it out to be. Simply be awesome. Live each day with positivism and the ambition to make it your best.

Think of others as team mates. We are all “on one team” and it’s the same team! Everyone’s goal in life is happiness, success and love. Whatever vehicles you use to get you there does not separate you from the person next to you.

Listen to Kid Awesome and be inspired to act GOOD.

Creativity Blossoms

Standard

Malayaka House takes pride in how our children blossom, thrive and continue to evolve and grow. Our older teens participate in vocational training, which provides them with many of the life skills to lead independent and empowered lives. More traditional, formalised education is enjoyed by the children as well, leaving a gap for more creative educational experiences which is filled at the house, often with the help of volunteers. These experiences are vital as it allows the children of Malayaka House to express themselves and link their formal education to traditional and non-traditional vocational experiences later in their lives. Art is important and fun!
